Hot water that doesn't run out

A tankless unit heats water as it flows instead of storing fifty gallons hot. The pitch is endless hot water and a smaller footprint; the catch is that it only works when the gas line and venting behind it are sized for the job.
What does the install involve?
- The unit: wall-mounted, roughly suitcase-sized, frees up the floor the tank stood on
- Gas sizing: tankless draws far more gas at full fire than a tank; a lot of existing half-inch lines won't feed it and need upsizing
- Venting: category-rated venting, usually a new path out, not the old B-vent the tank used
- Electrical: an outlet for the controls and igniter
Repair vs replace on an existing unit?
Descale flushes are annual maintenance in most setups and fix most performance complaints. Error codes get diagnosed by model. A unit past fifteen or so with a failed heat exchanger is usually done. The soft water most of the county runs on is kind to heat exchangers, a tankless here lives longer than one fighting hard water, but the flush still matters.
Is it right for your house?
Households that run out of hot water, additions adding a bathroom, or anyone who wants the garage or closet floor space back. If your current tank does the job, a tank swap is the cheaper same-day fix, the pro who calls can talk through which one your situation actually is.
